Its first church, recorded in…The parish was founded on 27 January 1625 and entrusted to secular priests, with don Nikola Halujevic as the first parish priest. Its first church, recorded in 1261 as Santa Maria de Moris vel de Rivo, was demolished by order of the Venetian authorities in 1657, because it stood in the path of the new western city walls.

A painted crucifix and a Pieta saved from that building are kept in the present church, together with a statue of St Martin, the second patron of the first church. The parish has celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross for six centuries and keeps a 500-year tradition of folk Glagolitic singing.
