Port of Split

Split Cruise Ship Schedule

Split packs a lot into a port day. Ships berth at Gazenica, about three kilometres south east of the peninsula, which is a ten to fifteen minute shuttle or taxi ride from the walls; the quay along the Riva takes small excursion boats only. The Old Town is compact enough that a call of six hours covers it comfortably, and because everything sits inside six hundred metres, the walking is short even when the day is warm. The forum and the Riva are busiest from mid morning to early afternoon, so the move that makes the day is starting with the bell tower before the queue forms.

Day in Split

Making the most of your port day

A typical call gives you time for the essentials at a reasonable pace: the Land Gate and Five Wells Square on the way in, Kalelarga to the Roman forum, then St Donatus and the cathedral bell tower for the one wide view in a flat city. From there the choice is water or museums: the Riva out to the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun, or the glass and archaeology collections beside the forum. On a short call of six hours or less, skip the island ferry, climb the tower at opening and keep lunch inside the Old Town so all-aboard never gets tight.

Practical details

Docking
Ships berth at Gazenica, about three kilometres south east of the Old Town, which is also where the car ferries and international sailings go. The quay in front of the Riva takes small excursion boats only
Port to Old Town
Ten to fifteen minutes by shuttle, taxi or city bus from the terminal to the Old Town. Bus tickets are cheaper from a kiosk than from the driver
All-aboard
Be back at the gangway around 30 minutes before your posted departure, plus the ride back out to Gazenica. Confirm the exact time before you leave the ship
The bell tower
The climb up St Anastasia takes about half an hour with the queue and gives the one wide view in a flat city. Go before ten, when the stair is quiet
Taxis
Taxis and Uber wait at the terminal. Agree or check the fare before setting off; the Old Town, Kolovare beach and the airport are the common runs
Beyond the walls
Ugljan is twenty minutes by ferry from Gazenica and Nin is half an hour by road. Both fit inside a long port day, though neither suits a call of six hours or less
